Gerald Wallin’s Hopes and Dreams for NARR
(Nominee for Vice-President, West)
May 28, 2004
It goes without saying that the position of regional vice-president should act to foster the expressed mission and goals of the organization. But that is really the role that all NARR members should play. In my view, I see the position going beyond that in several more ways. Brevity leads me to limit my discussion to these four, in no particular order. One is geographical representation. To the extent that issues arise involving geographical interests, the regional vice-presidents must represent those interests. Another responsibility is to commit to devote more time than the average member to advancing the goals and objectives of NARR. Thirdly, vice-presidents must strive to be valued advisors to the president, who usually serves as the “lightning rod” for the organization. Finally, the vice-presidents should be loyal supporters of the president in his or her relations with the parties, the NMB, and the members. If we cannot always achieve harmony or reach consensus, let us keep any differences to ourselves.
